Know Your Impact. Respect And Protect Our Communities.
Visitors and residents are inspired by the beauty and easy access to recreation in British Columbia. But increased visitor presence in natural spaces and a growing population has led many communities to feel the pressures.
If you're online or have a presence on social media, you may have seen some important messaging by way of videos and posts from an account called 'Don't Love It To Death'.
Curious what it's all about it? Read on!
What is 'Don’t Love It To Death'?
'Don't Love It To Death' is a program that began in the summer of 2022 to make travellers and outdoor enthusiasts more aware of the impact they’re having on the environment, wildlife and the people around them when recreating in the Sea-to-Sky Corridor.
Why was the program started?
The program was launched by the Sea-to-Sky Destination Management Council in response to an exponential increase in litter, wildlife conflicts, environmental degradation, and illegal land use throughout the Sea-to-Sky region in recent years.
What is the goal of 'Don't Love It To Death'?
The goal is to raise awareness and create the desire to shift behaviour, by encouraging visitors and residents to make better decisions when enjoying the region’s outdoors and community assets so that we 'Don’t Love It to Death'.
So. Are YOU responsible?
Being a responsible recreator means conducting yourself in a responsible, respectful manner toward the environment, people and wildlife. We are all guests on these lands and waters. Respect the people, wildlife, natural spaces, and communities by leaving the places we visit better than what we found them.
It's scary to think that disrespectful, negligent, and inconsiderate behaviour is threatening the places we love. Having access to these beautiful spaces is a privilege, and if we don’t change our ways we will lose that.
How can I be a part of the solution?
The best way to be a part of the solution is to minimize your impact and be mindful of the land, its people, and communities. The Don't Love It to Death website has some amazing resources and inspiration to reduce your footprint and explore consciously.
Whether you live in the Sea to Sky or are a visitor, we invite you all to treat the lands and waters with care and consideration. It’s up to all of us to be aware of our impact, respectful of these lands and the people and wildlife that call them home, and leave no trace. Together, we can keep Squamish beautiful for generations to come.
We encourage everyone to join the conversation. Help us spread the word by following @dontloveittodeath on social media and be sure to Tag #DontLoveItToDeath and #ExploreSquamishResponsibly, Like and Share.
